The Greater Manchester Walking Football League was formed in November 2016 in order to provide a much needed opportunity for Over 60’s walking footballers in the Manchester and surrounding areas. With Greater Manchester having the largest number of walking football clubs of any area of the UK, this was a natural progression from the standard Over 50’s leagues.
While many players in their 60’s and 70’s still play in Over 50’s tournaments and leagues, giving away 10 years in age does not provide a level playing field, hence the need for an older age category league.
The league will be played in 2 separate seasons, Spring and Autumn. Each season will be played on a 4 monthly cycle with a break in Summer, when other walking football tournaments are at their height, and a break in January. The Spring season will be played on the first Friday of February, March, April and May. The Autumn season will be played on the first Friday of September, October, November and December.
Points will be totalled across each fixture date to provide an end of season league table or tables if there is more than one division. The number of teams entered will determine the structure of the league for each season.
For each fixture, teams will gain points based on their result (3 points win, 1 point draw, 0 points loss ). The team with the most points after a 4 month season will be crowned champions of their respective division or divisions.
