The Greater Manchester Walking Football League was formed in November 2016 in order to provide a much needed opportunity for the Over 60’s, Over 65’s and Over 70’s walking footballers in the Manchester and surrounding areas. With Greater Manchester having the largest number of walking football clubs of any area of the UK, this was a natural progression from the standard Over 50’s leagues.
While many players in their 60’s and 70’s still play in Over 50’s tournaments and leagues, giving away 10-20 years in age does not provide a level playing field, hence the need for older age category leagues.
The league is played in 2 separate seasons, Spring and Autumn for both the Over 60’s and Over 65’s Leagues. Each season is played on a 4 monthly cycle with a break in Summer, when other walking football tournaments are at their height, and a break in January. The Spring season is played in February, March, April and May. The Autumn season is played in September, October, November and December.
In 2018 two Over 70’s Cup Tournaments are to be played and no doubt an Over 70’s League will be formed in the near future.
